I went to this movie with low expectations and I was blown away.
The plot is still your generic superhero fare: a bad guy is planning to take over the world and only a handful of superheroes can stop him. (Don’t villains have other aspirations? Somebody please tell them that there are a lot of greater things in life other than world domination. :P )
Anyway, the overused plot was saved by the witty script and sharp characterization.
Nope, these costumed heroes do not have the internal turmoil that Peter Parker had in the Spiderman movies but they are still fleshed out and I think it is the simplest element in the movie that makes the action scenes comprehensible (take notes, Michael Bay!) and enjoyable.
The one-liners are also a hit, with Robert Downey’s Tony Stark (Iron Man) stealing the spotlight by employing cynicism in everything which saves the movie from campiness territory. Every banter between the characters is perfectly timed and isn’t overdone.
And seriously, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye is one of the sexiest page-to-screen character incarnations ever.
